I never seen black sand so big I'll be sure to start putting a coin in every pic.... just so I don't have to hear you say it's magnified

I can assure anyone that fireonthemountain does not magnify gold..period lol. I seen this pan in person..its great gold. This was panning thick clay. Pan and shovel.

I have always said to pay attention to clay and many have told me otherwise.

If your playing in gravels and your getting some gold(even if its a few specks), take the extra effort to get to the clay. It does not matter what color it is(blue, red, teal, gray etc) as long as there is material(grit, rocks, sand) mixed in it then its fair game. If just the top say...inch has rocks etc in it and on down its just void thick clay then probably most likely not worth the time. The clay is not usually a source(as I know some believe that). It can be if the rock holding the gold is decayed and turned to clay. Most of the time it has just traveled and makes its way down. There's the big secret! Give it a try...(I thought this was 101 but a good bit say if its clay I don't mess with it). Its harder to work and must be broken down all the way or desired result won't be achieved.)

i agree. alot of times if theres no gravel in the clay then theres not much gold either. the top part of the clay is the best i normaly take the first 6-8 inchs and see what happens.

The clay is always subject to being very good even if its 2 ft thick..as long as there's grit/gravels in it..dig it. Those who do not mess with clay..start doing this and you will probably get more gold(not 100% guarantee).

I found my biggest nugget in deep blue clay. Just say' n..... What I started doing is throwing it on the bank and let it dry out, then crush into powder.

The best stuff I have found(small and large) and seen found by several but fireonthemountain has a great knack for hitting it, has come from the most annoying clay to work with.. Its usually blue or a gray/blue because its rhyolite turned saprolite(decayed rock) and is usually why its blue. So placer gold that has traveled into rhyolite clay. Common for NC.

The clay is annoying to work with. Lately I've just been shoveling straight into my pan and breaking it up.... pretty much no matter how you do it is a pain in the ass with thick clay
