Aside from metal detecting, I fish with a friend who has a commercial licence. This morning I got all the crabs from our traps. Filled a bushel basket. I'll clean them, ice them overnight then put them through a press to extract the meat. Should be over 6# of pure blue crab meat, not counting the claw meat. It'll take a couple hours to clean and split the crabs, then another hour or so to press the meat from the shells. Cleaning the claws after steaming takes another hour or more.
I've used this crab meat at outings and fried crab cakes at the picnic table. .

If I ever get the chance to come prospect, and still have some of this meat left, I'll bring you some.
Eye surgery next Wed. not real sure I can make the get together on the 8th, but I'll get there one day. Save me a spot on your creek.

9:00 and I got about half of them cleaned. Got the rest iced down and I'll finish them in the morning. It looks to be at least 6, maybe 7 dozen crabs were in that basket. I'll get a count in the morning.
If I can find that picture program I was using, I'll show you guys what's involved with pressing these rascals. Burnt up my other computer and still getting programs loaded in this one.

I don't understand the whole pressing process.. I always boiled them, then de shelled them..

The pressing process is done by use of a tool called the "Crab Master II". After gutting and splitting the crab, it gets iced down to chill the meat and soften the shell, then put through this roller type gizmo to extract the meat. It's all very scientific. LOL!!!
Here's a video on that tool.
I use it a little differently than she does. I just keep crushing them and the meat rolls off the end into a shallow dish. That's an old video, the price of this tool is now up around 60.00 plus shipping.

That's pretty interesting.. I never thought about extracting the meat separately.. Have you seen any of that new species of shrimp down there Bob? I am talking about the asian shrimp, they are giants, like up to 1 foot long?

Yeah, they're called tiger shrimp. We got a couple last year, and yes they are whoppers. Didn't measure them but I took a pic of one in my hand. It stretched out from my wrist to beyond my middle finger. Fine eating too.
The total on the crabs was 5 dozen. Got 3 dozen cleaned this morning and got 3# of meat, so it looks like I'll end up with near 5# give or take an ounce, and I've got 4 of those large butter tubs full of steamed claws to pick though. That should yield another 2#
This is the only way to save any crab meat, other than cooking and picking the meat out then freeze it. I believe you get more out of the crab this way with very little waste.
Crab cakes for supper!!!

I don't eat netted fish either, unless I net them. They die in the net then sit in 80 plus degree water as long as 18 to 24 hours.. Our fish and shrimp go on ice when caught, no soaking them in hot saltwater for hrs until we get back to them.

Went out today to get the pots in and see what the last two days have caught. We ended up with an over flowing bushel basket, close to 100 I'd say, and some really big ones in that mess. My buddy John got this load for his family to have this weekend.
We lost one trap and found a trap on the shore, so we only harvested 8 traps, but got a replacement that's in pretty good shape. We'll probably put them out again next month when we feel like eating crab again.

I'd like to think sooner than that. We get white shrimp coming through, then the brown shrimp I believe is how it goes. It takes a slightly different type of trawl net for each kind.
One of our friends tried shrimping last week, got nothing to speak of.
My friend John is 80 yrs old last month. We might not shrimp anymore. It's getting too hard for him to handle it. We do it all by hand and sometimes that bag comes in with over 100# of shrimp and fish in it. We'll see, he's a tough old bird.

My friend in Savannah, Ga wants me to come down and shrimp with him in August. Last year he caught one tiger shrimp, didn't think nothing of it, and baited his line with it.. He regrets doing that.. haha oh well we should get a few more this year.

I've had seafood omelets before and remember them to be pretty good, so I thought I'd throw a handful of claw meat into my scrambled eggs this morning. Dammit boys was that good!!!

Hiya Kev. Yup got crabs again and again. I thought you were a permanent fixture in Va. I need to ride up that way sometime soon. Just had 3 skin cancer surgeries and cataract surgery two weeks ago. Been wearin' out medicare since January. I can finally see well enough with both eyes to get myself out of Supply NC.
Good to see you on the site. Amazing how these guys can find places to prospect on private land when that other guy couldn't.

Haven't been able to make the move to VA yet! That's on hold for at least another year. Got tons of stuff going on!!!!
Finally got to put the dredge in the water for the first time since October 2 weeks ago. Haven't had time to do any prospecting.
I will be headed to California soon for a couple months to do a little digging.
