Does anyone know if any gold deposits were ever found in Wake county? I read that Nash and Durham county were prospected for gold.

I have found some in Northern Orange County. I know of a man who says there is a gold vein in a cave inside of Red Mountain (northern Durham County), but thats all I can say. Vic

Thanks I think I will try out a creek near my house that is next to a hill side with quartz outcroppings all over it. I was down visiting the Reed Mine last week and I was curious if the gold deposits reached this far East in the state.

They do, but the gold is small and it's hard to find a creek that makes the digging worth it. An old timer on here (will-D) told me there is gold in almost every creek in NC.

Unfortunately for us the geologic make up of eastern NC is no conducive to gold formations....at least non attainable near the surface. I cannot remember the name of the big Mall in Chapel hill but that is the dividing line, east there is gold west there is not, other than a few spots in Nash and northern Durham Co. Now if you could dig down about 3 miles you would certainly find gold, but that is a helluva good days digging for me, LOL. I have been itching to try a few creeks in down town Chapel hill, including one spot at a park that is downstream from an old gold mine, I would surely think there is at least some gold still to be found there, here is a link to the gold mines located in NC (keep in mind they are not exact but pretty close to the right locations. It never hurts to do a test pan anywhere (I do) but I have yet to find anything at all in Wake Co. maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&aq=&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=35.565746,-80.875854&spn=0.5686,1.752319&z=10&msid=201393025097845366486.00049c5edbe99a7868720&safe=on

I know this is an old thread but I used to work in Crabtree Valley Mall while I was in college. I had an old timer tell me one day that he used to pan for gold in Crabtree Creek. He even claimed he found gold.
