So I went out prospecting today, panning only, and I finally found my first bit of color!!!!! I wish I had pics but honestly it wasn't enough to brag about. I also had to learn to use my snuffer bottle correctly. I ended up loosing more than I captured but like everything else there is a learning curve lol. I purchased an Angus Mackirk recon sluice from Cabela's and hopefully if it arrives by Friday, I will venture back out this weekend. I have a couple of questions that I was hoping someone could help me with. What size classifier is good for a beginner in the UNF area? Also, how many five gallon buckets should I run through my sluice before doing a cleanup? Happy New Years!!!!!

Irishnc, If you lost some of your hard earned gold trying to use your snuffer bottle I hope you didn't lose or dump it back into the stream??
If so make sure you put all of your cons/gold that you can't suck into your snuffer bottle into a bucket and take it home to get the gold later using a safety pan/tub!!
Anyway congratulations on getting some color and have a Happy New year!!

I dont know about classifiers regarding AM sluices but i use a half inch classifier with my metal riffle slucie thats always worked well for me. As for clean ups i only do one and thats at the end of the day when i pack up to leave. This is because i stick to small creeks and normaly dont have alot of black sand to deal with. Now back in my uwharrie river days i would have to do a clean up every 5 gallon bucket or so. Clean ups just depend on your material and how much/often they clog your riffles.

I would classify down to a 1/4 inch for the angus. But check your stuff and pan the stuff that didn't go through the quarter inch screen to look for some pickers. On most other sluices or even panning I classify down to 1/2 inch.

Thanks Guy's for the help. Carolina Gold yes I ended up loosing my hard earned first few specks back into the creek. Lets just say I learned quickly how to not use my snuffer bottle. I think the one I have is definitely to big Garret Gold Hog. I will definitely follow your suggestion about the safety tub. I read on this forum that Rangers in the NF will not let you carry out your cons besides what is in a snuffer. Am I correct in assuming this?
UREgold are you referring to when you panned in Uwharrie River (big river) or in the UNF?
ywevis thanks for your suggestions. I went out and bought some wire mesh and cut it with snips to fit inside my 1/2 classifier. I think I might have a hard attack when and if I find my fist picker.

Honestly I been classifying to 1/2 inch, or just shoveling in to the sluice, works well on the bigger sluices. Just have to pull the big rocks out..
