My equipment finally came in this morning and off to the creek I went. One of my family members has a promising creek and I was in it the whole afternoon. It was my first time out prospecting and I had a ball! I'm not sure I was doing everything properly but it was nice to be in the creek digging. Not knowing really what I was doing I would dig down as much as I could and then pan it down. I am not sure I am panning properly but I did find black sand and some small specks of gold which is very exciting. I tried to read the river and find the best spots where the gold would be laying. The creek I was in is fed by a natural spring that came from an old mine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because like I said I am new to prospecting and I feel like I could use my time in the creek more wisely. I hope the weather man is wrong for the forecast tomorrow so I can get my butt back on the water and get to digging. Oh by the way, I talked my fiancé into going with me and she loved it.

Keep digging around and sample, sample, sample. Now is a good time to start mapping the creek out. Take notes on your map and watch what you see start to happen. Glad to here you found some color.

Keep at it you will get the hang of it . It's not good to go alone you never know what can happen so it's good she went with you. You should try and hook up with someone to help with the learning curve Tony

I am very new to prospecting as well. I received a Garrett pan kit for Christmas and have been out once and loved it. I've watched a lot of videos and I was out on the creek learning as I went along-found 1 speck! I like reading the posts on these forums and I just joined. Hope to get out on a group outing. I live in Davie County. If you ever want another newbie to come out with you contact me somehow. Weekdays are sometimes better for me. I own my own business and my kids are in school. Chris.

Just toss some lead shot in every pan, if you still have it by the end, you won't be losing that gold.

Yeah, I have to give James (ywevis)credit on that one. Was nervous at first but when I went under and calmed down, I did not resurface until a couple hours later. To much fun! We are fortunate to have many seasoned dredgers on this forum that have many dives and tricks to their credit that can help even an experience dredger. I highly recommend getting to know these guys and attend an event with them. Especially if someone is thinking about getting a dredge one day. Hopefully, this year mother nature will not be so harsh and grant us a good dredge season. Now is the time to work on locations and get that equipment up.
