Welcome!
Be careful while in Uwharrie NF. Make sure you know an follow all of the rules while there. If they catch you breaking any of them, you will be taken away in nice shiny bracelets. They will also take all of you're gear along with what ever you drove into the NF with. All violations go to a Federal Court as well as any and all charges will be Felonies.
I liked going to Uwharrie NF but when I called down there and tried to learn the rules of the NF... which each NF in NC has different rules by the way... After several calls on trying to learn what not to do, the person I talked to would not give me straight answers. All the woman would tell me is no mechanical devices are allowed but you can use a shovel in the middle of the stream or creek. If you look up shovel, it is a mechanical device... so go figure.
She finally did tell me no suction devices, no matter how small are NOT allowed to be used on the land or in the streams. Sniffer bottles are allowed as long as used in the sluices or pans only. I personally would not take any other kind of suction device into the NF, even if left in the truck. Hand dredges or hand suckers are not allowed on NF land.
I decided the rewards are not worth the risk for me.
Good luck and happy hunting,
Jerry

I messed up in my most James quoted me on.
Here are the corrections.
Suction devices of any kind are NOT allowed to be used in the streams or on the land in the NF. This includes the sniffer bottles.
You can only use a sniffer bottle in your pans and sluice boxes only.
I personally would not take anything other than a sniffer bottle in if it was me. The wardens watch you and I am sure there are other people that go out there just to watch us to see if they can catch someone messing up breaking the rules. This way they can use this against us and try and get us all banned from what we love.
Remember there are those that think the National Parks and Forest should be untouched. We do not belong in them as they should be left only for the animals. It is their belief that people should remain at home, look at pictures and/or watch shows of them on the internet and TV.
I would personally call the park rangers and look on the web to learn the rules for the NF I was wanting to go to before entering it. All of NF in NC has its own rules about prospecting for AU.
Sorry for any confusion this has caused.
Jerry
