Sure did watch em. With the weather getting warmer and people in the woods, safety should be talked about. Especially around old mine sites. I know you don't ever go to those locations but just say n'.

I've been in tons of old mines. Not only in NC, but i used to go in them all the time when I lived in California, Nevada, and Arizona .... I've been exploring old mines since I was about 9 years old. Used to go with my dad all the time. Some of my favorite memories....

OK. Following Cabarrusgold's suggestions to make this board even greater, here is my contribution for today. This gold mine is at the bottom of the hill and goes back over 130 feet. At the top of the hill is another gold mine. Directly between the two, mid way, is my new project. More pics to follow.

The Howie Gold Mine in Union County was like swiss cheese. Tunnels and adit to large pits everywhere and they all connected. Wish I had taken pictures back in the 90's of the place. It is now someone's home site and from the looks of GE, it's looks like all shafts to pits have been filled in and a horse farm now.

My post for today. This is the entrance to the mine at the top of the hill. The local historian says that mules pulled the vein rocks out of the mine in cars. Tomorrow's post will show where we are working. It's between the two mines. The upper and lower are about 150 yards apart and seem to run in a NE to SW direction, top to bottom. Will figure out this photobucket post some day. If anyone knows how to correct this picture thing, feel free to do so or tell me how to do it. Thanks.

Indy, I added your photos to this post and your previous post above, when posting photos with Photobucket you nesd to post the IMG link from the 4 boxes of links to the right and has "Links to Share This Photo" above them, find the box with IMG beside it and left click on the link, it should turn yellow and say "copied", then come to the forum and paste it where you want it in your post and the photo should appear when you post the reply.

Great, Gold Seeker. I was trying one method at a time until I hit it right. The problem is that I forgot where I started! Lol! I really appreciate your help.

Have ya seen the quartz mine? Some guy was digging for some titanium something forget the name of the crystal but it had to do with titanium. I never took pictures, but I should go back and take some.

I am pretty stupid to the mine thing as everything around me is open but did they find the vein and follow it, or dig the hole and hope to find it?

Did he like Snickers bars by chance....maybe the "Squatch" ran him off Maybe he found a big pocket of them and kicked rocks.. He said if he finds a little one, he made more money than all the prospectors in unf. He used to sell them to a college for their laser beams.

Some mining equipment outside a mine opening in arizona.. I didn't get a picture of the mine entrances, both mines have been collapsed. A giant waterfall area, leading to the mine site.. this is below the mine.. so peaceful.. This is in between the two mine openings, which both have by dynamited shut. But you see someone was recently working it. I know they didn't have white pvc pipe in the 1890's. I am guessing it was air or water line going in the mine. But I don't have a picture of that either.

I think they said 35 a hour, but I was there to help my dad, and they wanted me to train during the day, and he couldn't climb ladders so I stayed to help him.

I am pretty stupid to the mine thing as everything around me is open but did they find the vein and follow it, or dig the hole and hope to find it? See first vid that explains mines. They start a portal on an exposed vein and make an adit to start mine. Most call them tunnels. Tunnels have two openings. Adits only have one. They followed the ore where ever it took them.

Ok. My post for today. Earlier I posted the upper and lower mine pictures. This is the area between the two mines where we are doing "historical research." We are not mining...research only. If you look closely you will see a "pocket or vein" of quartz gravel. All the surrounding area is just red dirt, no gravel. If you take a small research sample with a hand shovel and pan it, you will find lots of color, including coarse gold and even small pickers. Each little scoop shows at least 10 colors. It's a long hike to the creek at the bottom of the hill so carrying a half full bucket of dirt for "research panning" is a lot of work.

Wow, nice Indy. That's how Adits gets started for sure. Great you found that vein. What made you pick that spot to look? Was there visible quartz or...?

A friend found it while tracking around. We had been sampling in and around all the stock piles of rock to be worked or tailings from previous activities, checking for free gold. We were also sampling intermittent creeks and the main creek on the property. A heavy rain had eroded an area on the hill side between the two mines. He had a sharp eye, cut away some brush and found it.

Find a small ephemeral drain nearby and bury a couple 5 gallon buckets even with the top of the ground. After the next rain, there will be 10 gallons of water waiting for you. You won't have to travel so far to pan. It works! Sam

Thanks Sam. I had an old plastic cement tub from Lowes that I buried last time I was there. Haven't been back in weeks. Probably dry or full of frogs by now. But still a good idea. I will take a few extra buckets next visit. I also put and old piece of carpet, I found in a trash pile, along the drainage ditch. Maybe I can catch a little color in it after a hard rain.
