My wife and I were having dinner overlooking all of Paris and had a lovely meal and wine. We finished our dinner and of course the wife had to find a restroom to freshen up. This left me standing alone carrying all the loot from the days shopping. I noticed a couple sitting across the street seemingly too inconspicuous which raised my alarms. ( something didn't feel right) one of the portrait artists walked by and asked if I wanted my portrait done. At that point I noticed the man of the couple got up and moved behind me. I told the artist I didn't want a portrait done he and left cussing me out in his nicest French way. (They cuss you out in the nicest manner thinking the dumb Americans don't know they are getting cussed out). Anyway, the female of the couple gets up and walks over to me and asks me a question in french knowing I won't understand her ( classic pickpocket distraction tactics). At that point instead of gesturing with my hands going forward like normal, I swung my hands back and stepped to the side. The guy behind me got surprised and made a "oh shit" noise and they both took off down the street. Plan foiled and lucky me.
tips to avoid pickpockets: wallet in front pocket if carrying bags put hands through handles and clinch the bags with hand wear jackets with zippers and keep them closed at all times be aware of your surroundings pickpockets always go for lone, easy targets avoid crowds when possible

When I was stationed in Norfolk Virginia I to learn very quickly to keep a wallet in my front pockets. I had ashipmates whom was pickpocketed after leaving a bar. It was so funny. The next morning he was talking about running into a beautiful woman outside the bar the night before. Later on in the morning he was mopping around the berthing like he lost something. When I asked him what he was looking for that's when he told me he thought his angel lifted his wallet. She got about 300.00!!

Do like Ywevis. Only carry gold nuggets to pay for purchases. Nuggets are harder to pick out of your pocket. Lol.

In London now. I feel a bit more secure here for some reason.

Just as likely to get mugged or pickpocketed about any large city in the world... Safe travels and have fun.
