Last night at our GPAA meeting. One of the members talked with the new lady director over UNF. She informed him that shovels were no longer allowed to be used in UNF due to the fact that you use your feet to dig with, not just your hands.
This was news to us. However he quoted her. (I didn't write down her name.)
Has anyone else heard of this?

This keeps popping up, but we keep calling and the rangers office tells us that yes they are allowed. We will keep using them until we see written rules otherwise. We hear this at least every other week.

The "rules" that keep coming up are asinine to say the least. Its ok to go out and wallow out mudholes everywhere in a 4X4 but heaven forbid if you use a damn shovel to did a small hole in a creek somewhere that 99% of visitors to the UNF will never see. I will elaborate more later but for now I have to go to work.

I would quit asking, all it does is give them something to think about banning!

I will only use my hands while shoveling. Lol. I am going to start wearing my forest service hat just so I can scare the shit out of people.

Most shovels are hand tools consisting of a broad blade fixed to a medium-length handle. Shovel blades are usually made of sheet steel or hard plastics and are very strong. Shovel handles are usually made of wood (especially specific varieties such as ash or maple) or glass-reinforced plastic (fibreglass).
Hand shovel blades made of sheet steel usually have a folded seam or hem at the back to make a socket for the handle. This fold also commonly provides extra rigidity to the blade. The handles are usually riveted in place. A T-piece is commonly fitted to the end of the handle to aid grip and control where the shovel is designed for moving soil and heavy materials.
Hand shovels have been adapted for many different tasks and environments. They can be optimized for a single task or designed as cross-over or compromise multitaskers. Examples are given under "Types"
