Ok this might be a dumb question but I'm fairly new to panning and running a sluice. I recently purchased an AM Recon II and doubt I use my metal sluice again. The question I have is when do I know it's full or time to do a clean up? The first time I used it I would run 15-20 garden trowel scoops of 1/4" classified material before I would start getting paranoid that I was losing gold and do a clean up. Thank you in advance for your input.

it really depends on your material. if your dealing with a lot of black sand then you will need to do clean ups often. with the am eureka I have to do a clean up after every 5 gallon bucket or the current will scour the riffles out. my keene a52 can run all day long without any clean up as long as theres not a lot of black sand. again it really depends on how many heavies you have in your dirt. the less black sand the less number of clean ups. as long as your black sand is minimal then I would do a clean out every 5 gallon bucket since you are using an am sluice.

That makes sense.. I try to stay out of the main river because of the crazy amount of black sand. I'm getting maybe 1/4 cup black sand in the creeks per 5 gallon bucket. Thanks for the info uregold.

You can go out with URE and I. We can show you how to run your angus. I have a perfect spot. Let us know when you can go.

I agree uwharrie river does have unreal amounts of black sand. most of the smaller creeks don't have nearly as much black sand. that's one of the reasons I like smaller creeks compared to bigger ones.

Sounds good to me too. The next chance I'm going is New Year's Day. I went out today for a few hours I got out there around noon. The water was really high and hard to get to good spots in the creek. Found a few colors nothing special. I tried only classifying to 1/2" today and it worked well and was faster without having to go to 1/4". I got into some clay and that slowed things down tho.

I only had maybe 6-7 little specks in my clean up. I had my waders but the water was too high and fast to get material in my normal spots. The high water should be shifting things around and hopefully uncovering some good color. On the drive home I was trying to think up a way to make some kind of sluice to leave in a creek when it's going to flood like that and let the nature do the digging for me. Lol

I was near Randolph county and I also had problems with high water. take a 20ft section of black corrugated pipe and cut it in half long ways. then stake it to the bottom of the creek with rebar. pretty sure that's not allowed in the national forests lol but ive heard stories of this being done on private land.

Hmmm... I might need to double check and ask someone else at the ranger station but I stopped in there today and the lady said it was allowed. The only area she said was off limits were the creeks around coggins mine.

First time I stopped at the ranger station about 4 years ago they gave me about 6 or 7 papers like that. They said it was because of old claims that were still on file. The last time I stopped, last year or the year before, I swore they told me the old claims had expired, I think they said the claims lasted for 99 or 100 years. The fellow that owns Coggins mine is who told me it was ok to pan at Big creek. That is the creek near Russel mine I think.

yeah I used to go down to the russel mines a lot. that's where I learned how to run a sluice box and find gold in a creek. that place is weird now. not sure if you can go there or not. I stopped going there around 2006.
