That way you can do both! That's what I usually do. That way if I come across a good looking stream I can do a few sample pans. Problem solved... haha

yeah I carry my pan with me. these days my pack is gettin heavy. I used to do a lot of ultra lightweight hiking and camping on well maintained trails. now I bushwhack around the woods with 15 lbs of hammers in my pack while getting smacked in the face with branches... good times.
