It is similar to our game lands like uwharrie. Most of their rules are more liberal in most cases. Much of game land is private owned but managed by government. Blm land is government owned and managed. Research the land you want to access. Buy a metal detector:) they can be used on some blm land.

Blm is fair game for mineral exploration and claim filing. Just be sure there is not a valid claim where you are prospecting. Claim jumping is a federal offense.

All of what you need to know is on the BLM's website somewhere, here's a link to their "Mining Claims" page. www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/programs/mineral_resources/Mining_Claims.html It's also the responsibility of a person prospecting on public land to do their due diligence to make sure they aren't prospecting on a valid mining claim, you can check at the local BLM office and you also need to check at the county's Clerks office as well for the area. Just to clarify, the land that the BLM oversees is called Federal Lands, but it is owned by all of us, it is some of the Public Lands that the citizens of the USA owns, everyone has a right to prospect on our land, here are the states where you can stake a claim and /or prospect on BLM or National Forest (OUR) land. www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/programs/mineral_resources/Mining_Claims/where.html"Where Can a Claim be Located? There are Federally administered land in 19 states where you may locate a mining claim or site. These states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. In these states, the BLM manages the surface of public land and the Forest Service manages the surface of National Forest System (NFS) land. The BLM is responsible for the subsurface on both public and NFS land." All other Federal/Public Lands that aren't in the above mentioned states are not our lands and are owned by the Federal Government, all of these "Public" lands are "Acquired" lands, meaning that the government bought these lands from private property owners and turned these lands into National Forests and National Parks in the eastern USA. The National Forests and National Parks in the above mentioned western states have always been public/our lands and have never been private property, with the exception of mining claims to a certain degree as well as some other activities.
